Retirement Book: Michelangelo and “The Art of Retirement”

by | Feb 18, 2014 | Book Review

Art of RetirementIn the interest of full disclosure, Gary is a client of Advisor Web Marketing. Having said that, this review is not a paid review, nor is part of any contracted work that I have with Gary. I have read The Art of Retirement from cover to cover and completely enjoyed it, and admire the fact that Gary is donating all profits from the book to charity.

In The Art of Retirement, authorGary Williams (CFP®) sets out to develop a retirement planning guide that is not only educational, but inspirational and entertaining as well. This is accomplished by weaving financial and life lessons with the story of Michelangelo’s life and art.

“Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of
the sculptor to discover it.”
—Michelangelo

As you’d expect, The Art of Retirement addresses the financial aspects that are important in retirement planning, however what separates it from many Retirement Planning books is that it also takes into account the psychology of money, and planning for the retirement life. It addresses both your retirement plan, and your plan for retirement.

Profits Donated to Charity

As explained in the book, Gary’s life has been touched more than once by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The Art of Retirement grew out a desire to raise money for the fight against ALS, and to help other charities as well. As such, all profits from The Art of Retirement will be donated to charity, with ALS receiving 66% of those profits.

Ronnie Lott

The foreword to The Art of Retirement was written by NFL Hall of Famer, Ronnie Lott of the San Francisco 49ers.

The great thing about life is, just like this book, once one chapter
ends, another one begins. Exhaust each chapter of your life. If you do
this, your life’s story will be, as Gary calls it . . . “a masterpiece.

~ Ronnie Lott

I mention this because Gary has a limited number of books that have been signed by Ronnie Lott. He is currently giving a signed copy away on Facebook – all you have to do to enter is to like the announcement entry on “The Art of Retirement” Facebook Page (don’t forget to “like” the page while you’re there!).
